Power generation will depend on three factors:
1) Location of the turbine: Ideally wind turbines need an open space without houses or trees within a 10 meter radius to ensure the best quality wind. , the speed of the wind, and the design of the turbine. To get the best quality wind, turbines should be on a mast or pole roughly 10 meters high.
2) Wind speed: Turbines require a minimum of 3 m/s wind speed. In most coastal and Sahelian regions of Africa, wind speeds average 4.8 m/s or higher.
3) Design of the turbine: Smaller turbines require high winds to meet minimum power demands while larger diameter machines produce more power in slightly slower winds.
It depends on what is available and how large a unit you wish to build. We recommend a budget of 50 dollars to build the frame, a 24v alternator, and 5 meter tower. We do not include the cost of the battery, since most villages already use them to store energy. Larger 1Kw and higher units will cost closer to 200 USD using similar materials.
KOC offers various types of workshops every quarter in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The participation fee is $10 USD. Courses are free to students. Send us a message on WhatsApp to receive notifications of our next workshops in Abidjan.
The targets zones for the next series of rural workshops are the Folon, Tchologo, and Bounkani regions of northern Côte d'Ivoire.
Stay tuned. We are working on a series of shorts that provide step by step instructions on how to build a turbine in your country.
